The "Queen of the Orchids" can be found wild in Central
and South America. Pronounced "KAT-lee-ah", this orchid
produces several showy and fragrant blooms each year. The flowers
are short-lived (2-3 weeks for standard types, 4-6 weeks for miniatures)
but are generally regarded as the most beautiful and colorful of
all orchid flowers. The Cattleya orchid is most commonly associated
with corsages. This orchid only blooms on its newest growth. Orchids
in the Cattleya (C) group include Brassavola (B), Laelia (L), and
Sophronitis (S). Hybrids are sometimes abbreviated Blc, Slc, Lc,
etc. The photo above depicts Lc Powhatan, a semi-alba type.
