A. A. Chadwick Biography
Art Sr started growing orchids at the age of 13 when a friend gave him a Cattleya trianaei plant. He learned the finer points of cultivation from the estate growers near his home in Elkins Park, PA. At age 16, he worked for the largest cut flower Cattleya producer in Philadelphia. He majored in Botany and Plant Pathology from Penn State University and did graduate work in Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. After two years in the Air Force during the Korean War, he joined Hercules Inc where he eventually headed the International Agricultural Division traveling regularly to the orchid rich countries of Central and South America.
Art Sr has been active in the orchid societies of Dallas, Atlanta, Central Florida, and Delaware. In 1989, he co-founded Chadwick & Son Orchids Inc with his son. He has written 36 articles for the American Orchid Society and in 2006 co-authored the book, The Classic Cattleyas. He was the feature speaker at the first three Maymont Flower & Garden Shows in Richmond, VA. At age 82, he still grows 700 cattleyas at his home in Wilmington DE and ballroom dances competitively with his wife of 52 years, Anne.
